The physical chemistry of freezing influences whether a formulation forms an amorphous glass or a crystalline solid. Amorphous systems can collapse if product temperature rises above the glass transition temperature of the freeze concentrate. Crystalline systems may show eutectic melting, where ice and solute melt together at a fixed temperature. Formulators add bulking agents, lyoprotectants, and buffers to preserve structure and biological activity. The optimum cycle keeps product temperature below critical thresholds during primary drying while allowing efficient sublimation.
Lyophilization is a dehydration process that removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under low pressure. The material is first frozen so that water becomes ice; then the surrounding pressure is lowered below the vapor pressure of ice. Heat is applied gently so ice changes directly to vapor without passing through a bulk liquid phase. The vapor is collected on a cold condenser, leaving a dry porous matrix. This process differs from simple evaporation because the material remains frozen during the main drying stage.
The process usually has three stages: freezing, primary drying, and secondary drying. Freezing sets the ice crystal structure and can determine pore size in the final cake. Primary drying removes free ice by sublimation at low pressure and low shelf temperature. Secondary drying removes bound water by raising the shelf temperature, although some water may remain as part of the solid. Cycle parameters depend on formulation, fill volume, vial type, and equipment performance.
Handling practices aim to prevent moisture ingress and mechanical damage. Vials should remain stoppered and crimped until use, and reconstitution should follow the labeled diluent and volume. Shipping may involve temperature-controlled containers and desiccants, but direct contact between desiccant and product is avoided. Regulatory guidance expects documented storage conditions, excursion assessments, and stability commitments. Open questions remain about how best to predict long-term stability from short accelerated studies for every formulation class.
After lyophilization, the product is usually a porous cake or powder with a large internal surface area. This structure can absorb moisture quickly if exposed to humid air, so vials are sealed under vacuum or an inert gas. Moisture uptake may lower the glass transition temperature of the dried matrix and accelerate chemical or physical degradation. Storage conditions therefore depend on the formulation, container, and intended shelf life. Some products remain stable at room temperature, while others require refrigeration or freezing.

Inactivated rabies virus (by injection) Modern injected vaccines are CCEEVs technologically similar to what is used in humans. They are packaged as single-dose vials; the contents of the vials may either be a lyophilized powder (like in human CCEEVs) or a ready-for-injection liquid. Imrab is an example containing the Pasteur strain of killed rabies virus. Several different types of Imrab exist, including Imrab, Imrab 3, and Imrab Large Animal. Imrab 3 has been approved for ferrets and, in some areas, pet skunks. Modified live viruses (by mouth) Live rabies virus from attenuated strains. Attenuated means strains that have developed mutations that cause them to be weaker and do not cause disease. Recombinant live viral vector vaccine (by mouth) In this kind of vaccine, a suitably weak non-rabies virus is genetically modified to produce the antigenic "shell" of the rabies virus such as the rabies glycoprotein. As a result, the virions it makes after entering a cell would also have the shell of the rabies virus, allowing the immune system to learn about the antigen. It does not cause rabies because it does not have any other gene from rabies, but it may still be transmissible among animals depending on the design (replication-competence). Only the first two types are approved for pets and are eligible for a vaccination certificate. The last is generally only available to government agencies for use on wildlife.
=== Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) === Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) has changed the world of sequencing by decreasing the cost of sequencing and increasing the throughput. It does this by utilizing massively parallel sequencing to sequence the genome. This involves clonally amplified DNA fragments that can be spatially separated into second generation sequencing (SGS) or third generation sequencing (TGS) platforms. There is variation between these protocols, but the overall methods are similar. Using massively parallel sequencing allows the NGS platform to produce very large sequences in a single run. The DNA fragments are typically separated by length using gel electrophoresis. NGS consists of four main steps, DNA isolation, target enrichment, sequencing, and data analysis. The DNA isolation step involves breaking the genomic DNA into many small fragments. There are many different mechanisms that can be used to accomplish this such as mechanical methods, enzymatic digestion, and more. This step also consists of adding adaptors to either end of the DNA fragments that are complementary to the flow cell oligos and include primer binding sites for the target DNA. The target enrichment step amplifies the region of interest. This includes creating a complementary strand to the DNA fragments through hybridization to a flow cell oligo. It then gets denatured and bridge amplification occurs before the reverse strand is finally washed and sequencing can occur. The sequencing step involves massive parallel sequencing of all DNA fragments simultaneously using a NGS sequencer.
=== Refinements === Cornelis Van Niel made key discoveries explaining the chemistry of photosynthesis. By studying purple sulfur bacteria and green bacteria, he was the first to demonstrate that photosynthesis is a light-dependent redox reaction in which hydrogen reduces (donates its atoms as electrons and protons to) carbon dioxide. Robert Emerson discovered two light reactions by testing plant productivity using different wavelengths of light. With the red alone, the light reactions were suppressed. When blue and red were combined, the output was much more substantial. Thus, there were two photosystems, one absorbing up to 600 nm wavelengths, the other up to 700 nm. The former is known as PSII, the latter is PSI. PSI contains only chlorophyll "a", PSII contains primarily chlorophyll "a" with most of the available chlorophyll "b", among other pigments. These include phycobilins, which are the red and blue pigments of red and blue algae, respectively, and fucoxanthol for brown algae and diatoms. The process is most productive when the absorption of quanta is equal in both PSII and PSI, assuring that input energy from the antenna complex is divided between the PSI and PSII systems, which in turn powers the photochemistry. Robert Hill thought that a complex of reactions consisted of an intermediate to cytochrome b6 (now a plastoquinone), and that another was from cytochrome f to a step in the carbohydrate-generating mechanisms. These are linked by plastoquinone, which does require energy to reduce cytochrome f.
In October 2017, Whirlpool and Sears Holding Corp. ended their 101-year partnership, which had allowed Whirlpool-branded appliances to be sold at Sears and Kmart stores, due to unresolved pricing negotiations. Whirlpool continues to manufacture Kenmore appliances for Sears. In March 2020, Whirlpool Corporation announced the official opening of a new Factory Distribution Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In November 2022, Whirlpool acquired the Wisconsin-based garbage disposal manufacturer InSinkErator.
=== Automated insulin delivery === Tandem introduced Basal-IQ in 2018. The feature used predicted CGM values to suspend insulin delivery when glucose was expected to become low and resumed delivery when values recovered. Control-IQ is a hybrid closed-loop system that uses CGM readings and a model-predictive algorithm to increase, decrease or suspend basal insulin and to deliver automatic correction boluses. Users still program personal therapy settings and normally announce meals. The FDA authorized Control-IQ through the De Novo pathway in December 2019, creating a regulatory category for interoperable automated glycemic controllers. Tandem launched it in the United States in January 2020 as a software update for compatible t:slim X2 pumps. A revised version, Control-IQ+, broadened supported therapy settings and was cleared in 2025 for adults with type 2 diabetes who require insulin. In the United States, Control-IQ+ is used on both the t:slim X2 and Mobi platforms.

The nucleation of new actin filaments – the rate-limiting step in actin polymerization – is aided by actin-nucleating proteins such as formins (like formin-2) and the Arp2/3 complex. Formins help to nucleate long actin filaments. They bind two free actin-ATP molecules, bringing them together. Then as the filament begins to grow, formin moves along the (+) end of the growing filament, all the while recruiting actin-binding proteins that promote filament growth, and excluding capping proteins that would block filament extension. Branches in actin filaments are typically nucleated by the Arp2/3 complex in concert with nucleation promoting factors. Nucleation promoting factors bind two free G-actin molecules, then recruit and activate the Arp2/3 complex. The activated Arp2/3 complex attaches to an existing actin filament, and uses the two bound G-actin molecules to nucleate a new actin filament branching off of the old one at a 70° angle.
== Reactions == The reactivity of hydroquinone's hydroxyl groups resembles that of other phenols, being weakly acidic. The resulting conjugate base easily undergoes O-alkylation to give mono- and diethers. Similarly, hydroquinone is highly susceptible to ring substitution via Friedel–Crafts alkylation. This reaction is often used for the production of several popular antioxidants, namely 2-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenol (BHA). The useful dye quinizarin is produced by diacylation of hydroquinone with phthalic anhydride.
=== In the Indian Ocean === In the Makran Trench, a subduction zone along the northeastern margin of the Gulf of Oman adjacent to the southwestern coast of Pakistan and the southeastern coast of Iran, compression of an accretionary wedge has resulted in the formation of cold seeps and mud volcanoes.
There are approximately 300 types of garlic produced worldwide. Garlic market regions include North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Within China, which produces the largest amounts of garlic, there are five main provinces in which garlic is grown, including Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu, Yunnan and Hebei. As soft neck varieties tend to flourish in warmer climates where winters are mild, the Chinese provinces are suitable for harvesting and manufacturing garlic powder.

The main change is sublimation, in which ice becomes water vapor without melting into liquid water. This occurs when the chamber pressure is held below the vapor pressure of ice while mild heat is supplied. The result is a dry, porous solid that retains much of its original shape.
Freezing determines ice crystal size, solute distribution, and the pore network left after drying. A slow or fast freezing rate can produce different cake structures and affect reconstitution. It also sets whether the formulation follows an amorphous or crystalline drying path.
It removes most free water during primary drying and part of the bound water during secondary drying. A small residual moisture content often remains and is specified for each product. Complete removal is generally neither practical nor desirable for stability.
Collapse occurs when the product temperature rises above its collapse or eutectic temperature during drying. The frozen matrix loses structure, producing a shrunken or melted appearance. This can slow reconstitution and may affect stability.
